Harvey Estes

Harvey Estes began constructing crosswords in the early ’90s. At first it was just a hobby, but in 1998 he left his job in substance abuse rehab to go into puzzle construction as a full-time profession. His puzzles have been published by Simon and Schuster, Dell Crosswords, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, CrosSynergy, The New York Times, and many others. He has also constructed puzzles for many non-crossword publications such as “Catholic Digest,” “First for Women,” “IBM Software Quarterly,” “Boston Book Review,” and AAA’s “Traveler” magazine. Several books of his crosswords have been published by Sterling, including “Riddle Crosswords” and “H is for Holstein.”

Harvey went to seminary at Duke University and served for seven years as a pastor in the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. He currently plays bass and acoustic guitar at St. James UMC in Greenville, NC and also plays and sings at nursing homes, community gatherings, and “any place where kindness and poor taste in music will tolerate the sounds I make.”
